The department of the Allier lies in the north of the Auvergne, about 300 km south of Paris. The capital of the Allier is Moulins. Rivers, woods, hills and the hedges that divide the vast fields create sloping ramparts that makes the Allier a landscape which was once, the cradle of a French royal family. Other larger towns in the area include Montluçon and Vichy.

“Le Pal”, a beautiful amusement-park lies east of Moulins and is also well worth a visit. The combination of a zoo and attraction park is a great day out. Shows are given daily with the usual performing animals including Seals and Parrots. Included in the attractions is wild water rafting ride and a roller-coaster.

Unknown to most snow lovers it’s also possible to ski in the Allier. “La Loge des Gardes” has 5 pistes with 4 ski-lifts. Larger ski-areas can be found elsewhere in the Auvergne, such as Le Mont-Dore and super Besse in the Massif du Sancy and Le Lioran in the Massif du Plomb du Cantal.

The regional wine of the Allier comes from Saint-Pourçain. Against the southern facing slopes plenty vintages can be found. In the borough its self is the museum “La Vigne à Saint-Pourçain”. Sancerre and Poulliy are also a stones throw away for all you wine connoisseurs out there.
