The French region of
the Auvergne lies in the middle of France and is renowned for its rough
characteristics created by extinct volcanic strata. This is most prominent
in the departments of Cantal, Haut-Loire and Puy-de-Dôme. Our domain
Les Royautés lies in the more sloping, undulating most northern
department, the Allier.
Less than 2 hours from us, west of Clermont-Ferrand, you will find the first former volcano, the Puy-de-Dôme. Here several volcanoes lie next to each other and the last of them has been extinct for about 4000 years. From the top of these volcanoes you have fantastic views of the region. Smaller craters are easy to recognise from these vantage points. These areas in particular make very beautiful walks. Close to the Puy-de-Dome lies the theme-park “Vulcania”. Bubbling, growling and bursting out volcanoes can be seen close up! From archeological excavations it has become clear that the Auvergne is an area where the earliest traces of human civilisation can be found. It is believed, through research and carbon dating that there was human life on the banks of the river Allier around 1,800,000 years ago.
