~~~~ Bourges ~~~~ |
A beautiful and sociable town to walk, shop or just sit on the terraces is Bourges, about 80 km to the north of Les Royautés. Between the historical buildings you will find innumerable restaurants, café bars and terraces. Bourges is the capital of the neighbouring department the Cher, with a history dating back about two thousand years. A must-see is the cathedral of Saint-Etienne that has been protected worldwide since 1992 when it was listed under the heritage of UNESCO. The interior is very impressive; the chancel ambulatory is decorated with exceptionally beautiful lead windows which give an impression of the development of the art from the 13th up to the 17th century. The cathedral is open daily. You can stray for free throughout the cathedral; under the cathedral are crypts which you can only visit with a guide, there is a small fee for this. The most beautiful street in Bourges is the Rue Bourbonnoux, which is situated next to the cathedral; it has many timber-framed houses and nice little shops. |
