~~~~ Moulins ~~~~
The capital city of Moulins, is about half an hour drive south-west from Les Royautés. The town lies on the banks of the river Allier. It is a pretty town centre with shops, restaurants, monuments and some fantastic old buildings. All the large French supermarkets have been established on the outskirts of the town and for those of you who can’t miss fast-food: there’s also Mac-Donald’s...
The Allier is the former duchy “Bourbonnais” and in that time Moulins had a very rich cultural life. From all over the country artists and musicians came to the town. That made the king of France jealous, not long afterwards the Bourbonnais lost their independence and became a “royal area”.
A curiosity, worth a visit is the Cathédrale Notre-Dame. This elegantly rising construction, in flamboyant-Gothic style was built between 1474 and 1507. There are splendid leaded windows to admire and also the vault of the black virgin. Here, a replica of the black virgin of Le Puy, makes it clear that this cathedral was and still is a stop on the pilgrim route to Le Puy and Santiago the Compostella.
